Heinrich Vogeler and the artists of "Jugendstil"

April 4 Fri. - 19 Sat. 2008

gJugendstilh means a trend of an art movement which emerged among young artists around Munich and Berlin in the end of 19th century. It corresponded to gArt Nouveauh in France and Belgium. It took its name from the illustrated art magazine gJugendh which was published in Munich in 1896.
The illustrations in it were influenced by French Art Nouveau, so this was called gJugendstilh (youth style).

Heinrich VOGELER(1947- )

Born in 1872 in Bremen. Moved to Worpswede in 1894, and made decorative works showing nature as a world of fairy tale. His print works were introduced to Japan by the special issue of gShirakabah in Meiji period.
Joined the German Army as a volunteer in WWI and was working for the German counter intelligence against the Soviet Union. In course of time he started to sympathize with the socialism, then he started to draw  pictures of the war and tragic life of poor people, using the way of expressionism. Then he moved to Soviet Union and died in 1942 as a proletarian artist in Kazakstan.
