Eikoh Hosoe's series of "Kamaitachi" which was a collaboration with Tatsumi Hijikata, a "butoh" dancer, was photographed in 1965 in Hijikata's hometown, Akita prefecture. It was first issued as a photo album in 1969.

This autumn, "Kamaitachi New Edition" containing unpublished works was published again.

TOKI-NO-WASUREMONO is holding an exhibition of Eikoh Hosoe's 42 works including 8 of his previously unpublished works in two rounds, from December 15 to 26 and from January 6 to 16.


Eikoh HOSOE (1933 - )
Photographer. Born 1933 in Yamagata Prefecture of Japan. In 1951 was awarded the top prize in the “Fuji Photo Contest” (Student’s Section), decided to pursue a career as a photographer. In 1955, as a recent graduate of Tokyo College of Photography, participated in the founding of the influential photo agency VIVO. His most important work is “Man and Woman (1961)”, “Killed by Roses (1963)”, “Kamaitachi (1969)”, “The Cosmos of Gaudi (1984)”, “Shumpon,Ukiyo-e Projections(2003)”, many others. In 1970 received Minister of Education Award for Arts for Kamaitachi. In 1998, was awarded Purple Ribbon Medal from the Government for his Achievement of Photographic Art. In 2004, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of The Royal Photographic Society, he was given a special decoration, many others.
