Czech-American architect, 1888-1976. Raymond studied with Frank Lloyd Wright, and moved to Japan for the construction of the Imperial Hotel, Tokyo. He remained in Japan and established his own company there, where he designed buildings with a modernist approach. Maekawa Kunio, Yoshimura Junzo, George Nakashima and others trained at his office. Among his representative works are St. Luke’s International Hospital (Tokyo), the chapel of Tokyo Woman’s Christian

University, Gunma Music Center (Takasaki), and St. Paul’s Church (Karuizawa) which also appears in the works of the writers Hori Tatsuo (The Wind Has Risen) and Kawabata Yasunari (Palm-of-the-Hand Stories). In accordance with his will, Raymond Architectural Design Office continues to practice after his death in 1976. In 2007, the Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama, held the exhibition “Crafting a Modern World: The Architecture and Design of Antonin and Noemi Raymond."
