Over 40 years ago, on January 24, 1982, an avant-garde contemporary art gallery opened in the ancient capital of Nara.
The gallery was named Nishida Gallery, which launched with “the exhibition Masakazu Horiuchi and Arata Isozaki“.
Its owner is Kousaku Nishida.
Born and raised in an old-established family in Nara, while running his own business, he took notice of the talents of artists who were little known at the time—such as Enjin, Yasumasa MORIMURA, Shinji OGAWA, and Tony Cragg—and, inspired by the collection he had assembled, decided to open a gallery.
In the Kansai region, where the contemporary art market was still far from mature, his unique perspective was truly remarkable.
Although he surely faced many difficulties in running the gallery, he eventually fell ill and passed away on September 12, 2023.
After the gallery was closed, the remaining works were made available through a bidding process, following the necessary legal procedures and with the dedicated efforts of another gallery.
Mr. Nishida had been one of our most trusted supporters and collectors since the days of the Gendai Hanga Center.
On this occasion, we are pleased to exhibit and offer for distribution a selection of posters from Mr. Nishida’s former collection, which we have recently had the good fortune to acquire.
We warmly invite you to view the exhibition and hope that you might consider enriching your own collections with these works.
